Introduction

For those in the know, Cedar Cabin is the coolest cabin in Thredbo. The combination of a minimalist interior aesthetic and an uninterrupted view of Mount Kosciuszko has won a loyal following of design & outdoor devotees. Simply, the best view in Thredbo, combined with strong contemporary design is an alluring combination for a discerning eye.

The loft bedroom, open plan cabin has been carefully reworked to respect the original 90s design of ‘Riverside’ by DJRD, which itself references the 60s design of the iconic ‘Sea Ranch’ in California, including its pitched shed roofs designed for the high winds, window seats and ladders. The lineage of the design cues was carefully curated by designer, Nicholas Gurney, and client who had a vision to create a year-round sanctuary.

The result is a sophisticated space that is both calming and energising, to explore and reconnect with nature – a base for adventure.

The perfect mix of rugged and luxury. Relax and connect with nature.”

The design invites the exterior in with a muted and brooding colour palette that’s mirrored in the textures and materiality.”

Background

In the early 90s Robin Dyke of DJRD was tasked to create “caravans in the snow” for a new development on the western side of Thredbo Village. Appreciating the mid-century timber structures in Thredbo Village, like the Thredbo Alpine Hotel and notable ski chalets by Bill Lucas, Harry Seidler and Peter Muller, Dyke set about designing ‘Riverside’ in a similar spirit.

Dyke was inspired by Sea Ranch by Charles Moore, located on the rugged western coast of California. Its design tucked into the cypress trees with rooflines having a slope ratio believed to provide the best way for the wind to pass over the buildings and cause the least disturbance. This was just one of a long list of architectural and landscape decisions, from modest sizes of the residences to native plantings, that put Sea Ranch way ahead of its time in environmental sensitivity. With its values of affordable living with modern architecture and a shared commitment to living lightly on the land.

Similarly, the buildings at Riverside were designed to be compact and lightly touch the ground, the development includes 66 cabins, primarily one and two bedrooms, and a restaurant at the entrance. The project was completed in four stages, the latest in 1994.

The cabin is part of a larger ‘front row’ group of cabins that follow the line of the Thredbo River, each having a site specific relationship with the landscape. The cedar cladding of the exteriors, age and shift in colour based on exposure to weather, mirroring the colours in the surrounding trees. The way the cabins become part of the landscape was very inspirational to the new owner and was an approach the brief would build upon, rather than compete with.

The Brief

Purchased in its original condition, the cabin presented an opportunity to refresh the interiors to reflect the strong forms of the exterior. It was imperative that the new interior meld seamlessly with the architecture, particularly emphasising the feature timber. Recognising Nicholas Gurney’s work in Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay, areas known for their small apartments, his expertise in the intelligent, multifunctional use of compact spaces made him the perfect fit for this project.

The Design

Born out of a love for good design and the great outdoors, this 40 sq m loft cabin packs a serious design punch. Featuring smart tech and strong design, it was recently shortlisted in the Australian Interior Design Awards. The space is both raw and refined, with vaulted ceilings, exposed timbers, and a Japanese-inspired onsen.

Since construction could only take place in summer, all renovations had to be efficient and modular. The clean lines and understated color palette were intentionally designed to accentuate the breathtaking vistas of Thredbo Resort and Mount Kosciuszko.

Upon entry, the kitchen’s bold use of black immediately stands out. A long, custom kitchen/dining/living island bench draws the eye towards majestic Mount Kosciuszko, serving as the heart of the cabin. Bespoke, streamlined joinery maximizes every inch of space, incorporating a full suite of Fisher & Paykel kitchen appliances and designer furnishings. The island bench also includes a compact Vintec wine fridge, cooktop, microwave, and a full fridge with freezer.

The original L-shaped kitchen was replaced with a ‘dry’ utility wall and a ‘wet’ island that features a dining component. This innovative design allows the kitchen to expand during cooking and contract for dining. Perforations in the kitchen screen provide dappled light and privacy, hinting from the footpath that this cabin is distinct from the others.

Wake up to the best views in Thredbo.”

In true alpine glamping style, the stairs up to the loft are a compact stair/ladder. The ceiling in the loft bedroom is clad in textural, rough-sawn timber. When lying bed, the A-frame ceiling slopes down in front of you. Almost like a tent – a luxurious, temperature controlled tent. The loft bedroom is minimally decorated with a bespoke bed and credenza. Above the credenza, the architect’s inventiveness of concealing clothing rails behind the timber beams remains intact.

The bathroom has underfloor heating and a Japanese inspired onsen, which fits two. An epic spot to unwind after a day on the mountains. a luxurious bath is lined in glazed Japanese ceramics and the walls in polished cement sheeting. A blackened steel shroud hugs the basin and emulates the folded steel detail in the kitchen and loft credenza.

Seamless joinery under the loft stairs houses a murphy bed. The lounge area has a comfy four person window seat for relaxing, with an uninterrupted view of Thredbo River. The window seat conceals air-conditioning and can be utilised as a bed for a 5th guest.

After an action-packed day in the alps, hang up your ski gear in the heated drying area and take a long soak in the luxurious onsen (Japanese-style bath). Fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the bubbling river nearby and wake up to the mesmerising views of Mount Kosciuszko. The dark green Japanese Yohen Border tiles from Artedomus complement the natural beauty outside, blending the indoor and outdoor experiences seamlessly.

Art

Art featuring Mount Kosciuszko by adventure photographer, Zain Kruyer and mid-century graphics by Barbara Stauffacher Solomon and a custom mural in the loft by by Bundjalung artist, Shaun Daniel Allen (Shal). The mural is inspired by the cabin’s architectural design history, the rugged landscape of the snowy mountains, and Shal’s personal creative practice.

Sustainability

Sustainability takes center stage as a fundamental consideration in this project. The design thoughtfully champions the local design industry by incorporating lighting fixtures and tap-ware. The energy efficient heating and cooling system is operated by Nest. Moreover, an emphasis on green and non-disposable products, coupled with energy consumption offsetting, exemplifies the unwavering commitment to eco-friendly practices.

The Opportunity

Continue the Cedar Cabin ‘brand’ or enjoy it as a bespoke personal retreat. Cedar Cabin is a sanctuary catering to a diverse array of clientele, as Thredbo has evolved into a year-round destination beyond the ski season. Its design seamlessly blends sturdy, industrial materials with delicate precision, creating a captivating, gender-neutral aesthetic. This unique combination makes it the perfect retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and festivalgoers alike, appealing to a broad spectrum of guests seeking an extraordinary experience amidst the breathtaking beauty of nature.
