Superhouse – Architects Talk Series
What makes a house super?
Adding another layer of conversation to exhibition Superhouse: Architecture & Interiors Beyond the Everyday opening on 29 August at Museum of Sydney, curator Karen McCartney hosts a series of talks with leading architectural thinkers and social commentators, delving deeper into the stories behind the exhibition and in fact the question: ‘what makes a house super?’
Organised into three themes, the talks looks at how some influential architects, including some whose work is featured in the book and exhibition, think about space, place, materials, scale and heritage when designing houses. Each talk includes an illustrated presentation from the speakers, followed by a panel conversation hosted by Karen McCartney. Talks will be held at the Museum of Sydney and include entry to the Superhouse exhibition.
Does Size Matter?
Friday 11 September, 6.30-8pm
A small building can still make a powerful architectural impact, as many of the Superhouse exhibition projects will affirm. In an age of bloated floor plans, and pressure on natural resources, the panel will discuss the issue of size through the lens of architects Paul Morgan and Alec Tzannes, and researcher / author Dr Rebecca Huntley.
Re Imagining the House
Friday 9 October, 6.30-8pm
What are the challenges and benefits of repurposing existing buildings into homes? The panel will broaden this discussion into its impacts on the urban environments, and look at how large-scale developments can take a more sustainable approach to the reinvention of buildings. Speakers include architects Dom Alvaro and William Smart, and Sydney Living Museums Heritage Director, Ian Innes.
Designing for Place
Friday 13 November, 6.30-8pm
Whether a direct relationship to landscape, climate, site, from urban settings to coast or country, ‘designing for place’ is one of the foremost preoccupations of an architect – and many would argue, a critical measure of their success. Panellists include architects Hannah Tribe, James Stockwell and Virginia Kerridge.
